Houses are not square. Walls bow, floors slope, and corners are rarely ninety degrees, which is exactly why store-bought units never sit right against a real wall.
Custom carpentry is built to the space. Built-ins, bookcases, window seats, mantels, closet systems and shelving, scribed to the wall so there is no gap to caulk and no shim showing.
Thirty years of doing this, most of it in New England houses that had already been standing for a century.

Cut, fit and scribe on site. Coped corners, tight reveals, no gaps to caulk. - Finish clean
Caulked, sanded and ready for paint, with the room put back and the dust gone.
